Public Speaking

Ever since I was a student, I have always shied away from public speaking - in any form. Whether it be debate, student government or even having to read aloud in class, my heart rate would elevate, my voice would stammer and my cheeks would be aflame. Exactly a year ago, I was given the opportunity to be a part of an internal Micron communications video and interview a member of our senior management. When I was given this opportunity, I was overcome with stage freight, nerves and could already feel my heart in my throat. It got to the point where my FitBit logged the interview as a workout - purely basis of my raised heart rate. Imagine my surprise when I was told the interview was praised, and I was invited to be a speaker for another internal event based on my performance.
I was so overcome with my own nerves, and bogged down by past experiences, that I didn’t even notice the interview going well. The conversation flowing, the natural quips, the light-heartedness and the vibrant synergy that was apparent to everyone else. Being a part of that interview was pivotal in my career and my development, because it gave me the confidence to be a public speaker - a quality I never imagined myself having. I thank Micron for unearthing this potential, encouraging me to pursue it and providing me with opportunities to continue to grow and become better.
Yesterday, I led a site-wide ceremony where we commemorated the opening of our “Body, Mind and Soul” Mural at Micron Singapore Bendemeer (MSB) sponsored by MSB Wellbeing Committee. We had 154 team members from across 20 departments come together to create this vibrant piece of art that has a permanent home in our site. This project was a tremendous opportunity for our team members to collaborate, be creative and embody the sentiment of wellbeing. Being a member of the executive committee for MSB Wellbeing, and having participated in painting as well, made hosting and introducing the final piece to our senior management, and 4000 MSB team members all the more special.
Hosting a live, in-person event after only being on webinars and Zoom meetings was certainly a feat, and I thank my colleagues for giving me this opportunity, and their endless support and encouragement. I wouldn’t be the individual, engineer and public speaker without this incredible company. Feeling very proud.
